Ina B.Sem-Olsen, 27.
Master student of Architecture - Bergen School of Architecture , Bergen, Norway.
Previously studies - Geography, Social Anthropology and City planning at University of Bergen.
My diploma project started 1 1/2 year ago doing a semester course in the Barents region – called Barents scenarios 2058 (check www.barents2058.com) During two very shorts visits to the Russian city Nikel, right across the Norwegian border, I was intrigued by it and its people. Despite a relatively harsh reality in a harsh climate, people expressed a strong belief and identity to their hometown. Now this is not so particular in it self, but given the general situation living in an industrial “monocity” with uncertain future in the russian north, the resent history of pollution, and the specific borderissues makes it an interesting situation.
My focus will be Nikel as a town for its people – and their future in Nikel. This leaves me many questions to put foreward and investigate. More to come…
My main focus will be; the structure of the city – as the city is shrinking how does the original structure function/what “holes” appear and how are they threated locally; the building mass – the potential in existing building mass as a backdrop for reinventing the town in regards of identity, program and structure.
